This guide will answer - is AppleCare worth it? Paying additional money over the purchase price of your Apple device is not an easy opt-in for buyers. The worth of AppleCare matters because it is not a cheap add-on. The option leaves most buyers wondering: is AppleCare worth it? Third parties generally can't recover the data, unless the device has failed in specific(lucky) ways. When buying a new Apple device, we are given the option to purchase additional protection with AppleCare+.

Unlike other vendors, Apple uses proprietary software and hardware for their disk encryption. I would buy it if you care about the data stored on it, and don't always back things up. You are right though for the Useage of the laptop the air would easily meet our needs One site commented that the fan cooling a chip is even more effective compared to having a faster chip. probably the only real difference between the two. Yes I actually priced out the air and when I did some reading online found the pro really has a slightly larger battery and has a cooling fan which the air doesn’t. Thks for the tips! Glad I posted to get a little more to consider in this purchase.

In general, my philosophy with computers has changed from "buy the best, future proof, keep as long as possible", to buy the "bare minimum needed and upgrade often".Ī good thing with AC+ is that if you get rid of the machine, they will refund any unused portion. If I was buying a machine today, I probably would skip the AC+ at the time of buying and evaluate my options after 1 year. I think they recently started allowing purchase of AC+ any time within the first year, but it requires a visit to a physical store so they can inspect the machine. (For phones, there's also AC+ with Loss & Theft.) I skipped it on my last laptop purchase because I didn't think I was going to keep it long enough. With AC+, you had to buy it within 60 days of purchase. It was an extended warranty without the damage stuff which AC+ includes. When AC was offered, I used wait to buy it till the end of the first year.

What you are getting is AppleCare+ (AC+) which is different from AC. The last time Apple switched CPU architecture (PowerPC to Intel):Īug 2009 - Apple removes support for PowerPC with Snow Leopard $1,249 on Apple's website with 8gb RAM / 512gb SSD or $1,449 for 16gb RAM. Otherwise, one is paying as much or more for an inferior product.įor the OP's stated purpose, I would go so far as to suggest that an M1 Macbook Air would be the best bet - same screen size, similar battery life (18 hours), same processor with similar performance, and many reviewers are favoring the M1 air over the MBP.

The only reason I can see purchasing an Intel over an M1 is if one:ġ) Needs to use Windows through Bootcamp, or And when they drop support, they drop it for models that are more than 2-3 years old. While it is true that Apple might phase out support, it is also true that Apple will give adequate warning so we can upgrade our hardware to a configuration that they support. That alone should be a serious consideration for someone thinking of keeping the laptop for more than 2-3 years. Ignoring the performance improvements that you would likely notice with the new M1 even in basic tasks, Apple might phase out support/OS updates for the intel based Macs within a few years. Even if the intel works well (I'm sure it will), the M1 is better and will likely last you longer. Just don't regret paying the same or more for older technology. Benchmarks are showing these models are outshining computers with 4x as much RAM. gpu-512gbĪlso, Costco has the M1 with 512gb ssd and 8gb ram for $1,449. A 13" MBP M1 with 512ssd and 16gb can be had for $1,579 on the apple website. The M1 has comparable power to the 2020 16" Intel with dedicated GPU. My 2012 i7 with 512ssd and 16gb is going really strong, too, but is being replaced with an M1.

Our 2013 macbook pro w intel core 7 512ssd 16gb is going REALLY strong so I figured for what we use it for the costco one would still be a massive improvement and the M1 model would not result in a noticeable difference for what we use macs for. The costco model is intel core 5 w 16gb and 512 ssd.

I wouldn't spend that on the Intel model when you can get a vastly superior M1 model for nearly the same price. Just to be clear: Are you buying an old Intel model or the new M1 model?
